How to do Frugal Water
You may have never really thought about it before, but if you have to pay a water bill, there are several ways that you can decrease your dependence on “the man” without sacrificing your current water usage. In other words, it is entirely painless to do.
Convinced yet? Well read on to find out several ways to save money on your water bill.
1. Outdoors
Keep it cool: If you have an air conditioner, you have a source of free water. Every air conditioning unit, whether it is central air or a simple window unit, as a method for ridding itself of excess condensation that builds up as a natural by product of its use. By placing a bucket under that drainage point, you can reclaim several gallons of water <i>per day</i>. I know because I have done it more than once and it really does work.
Rain, rain: Gallon after gallon of usable water are going to waste every time it rains if you don’t have a rain barrel attached to your downpout. Seriously, you should.
2. Indoors
Showertime: How long do you have to let the shower run before the water gets warm enough to jump in? Those few seconds can equal a gallon or more of wasted water that you are paying for! By doing nothing more than placing a bucket under the tap while the water heats up, you are reclaiming a good amount of water that can in turn be used to water plants or anything else you need water for.
Potty break: Here’s an idea that can decrease your water usage even if you don’t want to buy a new low-flow toilet. Take an empty 2-liter bottle and fill it with water. Place the bottle inside the tank of your toilet and the tank will fill faster and use less water. You can also use a brick or even a rock.
Brush brush!: If you aren’t already turning off the water while you brush your teeth and filling the basin while you shave, why the heck not? I mean, really.
